7-day Disko Bay Expedition roundtrip Kangerlussuaq, Greenland August 21 - 28, 2009
Follow in the footsteps of ancient Vikings. Learn native Inuit methods of traditional carving, fishing, dancing, and survival. Admire the astounding adaptability of man and nature. Visit places throughout Greenland where Norsemen once thrived, and ponder their historical mysteries. Across placid waterways and turbulent straits, thrill to the anticipation of each new discovery.

Day 1 – Kangerlussuaq, Greenland
Embark the Prince Albert II and depart on your exciting 7-day Silversea Expedition – "Exploring Greenland’s Disko Bay". This evening, you will be introduced to your Expedition Team and receive a Zodiac briefing.

Day 2 – Sisimiut, Greenland
Just north of the Arctic Circle we make way to Greenland’s second largest town, which is marked by a dominating Kaellingehaetten mountain. Sisimiut has archaeological sites that date back to the Thule period, when Inuit people first settled here.

The prehistoric Thule people date back to the year 1200, when life was simple. They lived off the sea and were a close-knit society. Later, Dutch whalers and Danish colonists found Sisimiut to be an ideal location for whaling, as the town is the southern most extent of walrus habitats and is near the once-rich whaling grounds. We may catch a glimpse of some boats in the harbour, which still sport harpoons.

Today’s local economy is no longer supported through traditional hunting, but the sea still provides for the thriving shrimping industry. Sisimiut is the northernmost town in Greenland where the port remains free of ice in the winter. It is also the southernmost town where there exists enough snow/ice to drive a dogsled in winter and spring.

Day 3 – Qeqertarsuaq, Greenland
This morning we arrive at Qeqertarsuaq Island, the “largest island” and visit the village with the same name at the southern tip of the island. Here we enjoy a guided walk through this small fishing and hunting town, of 1,000 inhabitants as well as walks with our expedition team to the “Valley of Winds” or Blaesedal. Next it is off to the Arctic Station, which is located just outside of town. Breathe in the incredible scenery of the Basalt Mountains and right from the deck of our Prince Albert II while diligently watching for whales as we explore deeper into the Disko Bay.

Alternatively, an optional helicopter excursion to the Lygnmark Glacier is available as is a short dog sled ride.

Day 4 – Qilaqitsoq, Greenland
Uummannaq, Greenland
This morning we set afoot to unearth history’s mysteries as we visit the gravesite of 500-year-old mummies, the best-preserved human remains in all of North America. Commonly referred to as the "Greenland Mummies", eight mummies (six women and two children) were discovered in 1972 and are believed to date back to 1475 A.D., give or take 50 years.

Disko Island is famed for its huge basalt mountains, and the highest peaks on the west coast are found near Uummannaq. Enjoy a guided walking tour of Uummannaq, a small hunting and fishing village, resting at the foot of a heart-shaped mountain. Life in this small village primarily revolves around the halibut/fish-processing factory, as it is a major employer of the area. We may have the opportunity to visit the church and old tured house before setting out on a hike to the summer home of Santa Claus.

Day 5 – Saqqaq, Greenland
As we continue our exploration of the Disko Bay area we stop of at one of the smallest settlements that we will come across during our explorations. We stop for a visit and share morning koffie and cakes called "kafee mick" with the Greenlanders, learning more about their traditions and cultures.

Before departing enjoy a Zodiac tour of the rugged coastline and the many icebergs that get stranded here after breaking off from the Jakobshavn Glacier.

Eqip sermia glacier, Greenland
Greenland’s west coast has dozens of long, deep fjords, many with glaciers fed by the ice cap that covers most of the country. This afternoon we meander through the ice packed waters heading towards the bulk of the magnificent Eqip Sermia Glacier. Whilst here, we may have the distinctive opportunity to experience the raw power of nature's phenomena known as calving. A breeding ground of sorts, where giant icebergs calve and float their way into the crisp, turbulent waters of the Davis Strait.

Day 6 –Ilulissat, Greenland
Just after sunrise, amongst a crowd of icebergs of all shapes and sizes in varying shades of white and turquoise, we find the northern hemisphere’s most active glacier, Jakobshavn. The Ilulissat Icefjord is known as the birthplace of icebergs, where nearly 20 million tons of ice is produced each day.

Ilulissat is the third largest town in Greenland. Founded in 1742 as a trading post by Danish merchant, Jakob Severin, Ilulissat is Greenlandic for "the icebergs". Known for its long periods of calm and settled weather, but the climate is a bit colder due to the town’s proximity to the fjord. While here, we may have the opportunity to attend an interactive demonstration of ancient fishing methods and enjoy some locally caught and prepared fish.

Our guide takes us on a walking tour through Ilulissat, where we visit the museum and learn about the long-standing history and economy. Our own natural history expert takes us on a tour of the Icefjord. Following this afternoon, we continue our tour via a fishing boat as we navigate amongst the many icebergs at the fjord’s entrance.

Alternately, take an optional excursion via helicopter to see the magnificent Jakobshavn Icefjord by air.

Day 7 – At Sea
As we make way back along Greenland’s west coast, we enjoy some time out on deck keeping an eye out for seabirds, dolphin, seals and migrating Humpback, Fin and Blue whales, or listen to additional presentations by our expert natural history staff in The Theatre or in the comfort of your own accommodation. Enjoy the finest cigars and cognacs at The Humidor or indulge in any of the other special amenities offered aboard ship.

Day 8 – Kangerlussuaq, Greenland
The Prince Albert II will arrive at Kangerlussuaq in the morning. After breakfast, disembark.
